A VLE is a Vessel Life Extension refit, which is essentially extending the life of the vessel until replacements are built and in service. Propulsion (engines), electronics and many other systems are updated and upgraded. We also give it a face-lift (fresh paint etc.), to enable a well-designed vessel (in this case a Cape Class Coast Guard vessel) to continue to perform it prime role and duties within the Canadian Coast Guard.
